Quick overview

Key Clamp Store ZM Tube is premium quality 42.4mm key clamp tube with a zinc aluminium magnesium coating on both sides of the steel.

It is made for the places standard galvanised tube struggles: coastal sites, livestock buildings, greenhouses and anywhere damp or chemically harsh. It has a more uniform finish and self-healing properties.

Cut it, drill it and fit it like normal tube. The coating protects cut ends and drill holes as it weathers, and the tube suits every 42mm key clamp fitting we sell.

What is ZM tube?

Standard galvanised tube is protected by a layer of pure zinc. ZM tube uses a zinc coating alloyed with aluminium and magnesium, a newer coating chemistry now widely used for solar mounting, farm buildings and coastal structures.

The coating is applied to both sides of the steel strip before the tube is formed, so every length is protected inside and out. The weld seam is re-coated after welding, so there is no bare strip along the tube.

How the coating protects

Each metal in the coating does a different job:

  • Zinc corrodes first, sacrificing itself to protect the steel underneath
  • Aluminium forms a dense oxide barrier that slows down attack on the surface
  • Magnesium helps form a stable protective layer that spreads across cut edges, drill holes and scratches

Zinc aluminium magnesium coatings are well established in the steel industry to outperform pure zinc coatings of the same thickness, especially at cut edges and in salty, alkaline or ammonia-rich air.

Best for

  • Coastal and seafront handrail
  • Livestock buildings, penning frames and farm gates
  • Greenhouses, polytunnels and garden structures
  • Car parks and walkways exposed to de-icing salt
  • Jobs where you cut to size on site and don't want to touch up every end

Stronger steel, lighter tube

Key Clamp Store ZM Tube is precision welded tube to EN 10305-3, formed from S350GD high-strength steel (minimum yield 350 N/mm²) with a 3.0mm wall. It weighs about 2.9 kg/m against 3.1 kg/m for standard 42.4mm x 3.25mm galvanised tube, so it is a little easier to handle and cheaper to deliver. Precision tube is also made to a tight outside diameter, for a consistent fit in your fittings.

For safety barriers, guardrail or anything load-rated, speak to us before you order and we'll check the design with you.

Working with ZM tube

  • Cut with a cold saw, bandsaw or hacksaw and fit it just like standard tube
  • Tighten set screws to the fitting manufacturer's recommended torque
  • If you weld it, clean the weld and treat it with zinc-rich paint, as you would with any coated steel
  • The finish is a smooth, matt silver-grey that dulls to a light grey patina outdoors. This is the coating doing its job
